NEWS: The Golden Knights have acquired Dysin Mayo from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Shea Weber and a 2023 fifth-round pick. #VegasBorn https://t.co/dbvcK80Bsr— Vegas Golden Knights (@GoldenKnights) February 22, 2023
Kevin Weekes was first to report the deal, which gives the Golden Knights added flexibility heading into the trade deadline and into the offseason.
Shea Weber hasn't played since the '20-21 season, so his place in this trade is purely a cap dump. A pretty sad turn for a once great player. Arizona also earns their 8th draft pick for this summer's draft, which is expected to yield a deep pool of players.
Vegas, on the other hand, acquires a depth defenseman on a cheap $950,000 deal as they gear up for the postseason. Mayo has only played 152 5v5 minutes for the Coyotes with replacement-level results.
Why would #Yotes do this deal?
Mayo is owed:
1. $234k this season
2. $2M next 2 seasons
Total: $2.2M
Weber:
1. $827k this season
2. $1.2M next 3 ($3M at approx 60% injury insured)
Total: $2M
For a minuscule salary difference, they receive a 5th and get closer to the cap floor— CapFriendly (@CapFriendly) February 22, 2023
