Grier's job is not easy. Being a general manager in the NHL is a tough enough job as it is, but when you take over in the middle of the worst crisis in franchise history, things get even tougher. By a lot. Grier is now learning first-hand just how terrible it can be, but even his expectations for the team must have been higher than this. Today he addressed the media regarding the team's ineptitude.
Sheng noted that Grier had a meeting with the team at practice today. Generally speaking, general managers don't do meetings with their players in the middle of the season unless there are special circumstances. Being 0-10-1 and giving up 10 goals in back-to-back games counts as special circumstances.
Obviously, Grier is not happy with the way his team has performed this season. Everyone knew the Sharks were going to be bad this season. That was part of the plan. What we did not know, is that we were signing up to watch one of the worst teams in the league's history. Grier made it known that if things do not improve immediately, changes will be coming.
One could argue that head coach David Quinn should already be packing his bags. While the roster he has to work with is far from competitive, giving up 20 goals in a two-game span should never be accepted in the NHL, period. Going 0-10-1 should never be accepted. having a -43 goal differential through 11 games is unacceptable. Buckle up Sharks fans, it is going to be a long season.
