The New Jersey Devils were in major need of a goaltending upgrade this season, and while they ultimately landed Jake Allen at the trade deadline, it wasn't the first time they tried to make a move for him.
Jake Allen blocked a trade to New Jersey this season?
After arriving in New Jersey at the trade deadline, Allen dropped a bombshell after Wednesday's practice with the team, revealing that he used his NMC to block a trade to New Jersey this season already.
Jake Allen after practice said Devils tried to trade for him earlier in the year. He didn't waive NTC bc at the time w/Vanecek/Schmid he didn't see a future/ playing time in NJ.
IMO: Allen would have played & Schmid would have gone down. #njdevils

The reason for the move from Allen is completely understandable, as he didn't see significant enough playing time with the duo of Schmid and Vanecek in town already, but with the team making a move on Vanecek, it became a much better option for Allen.
On top of that, the Canadiens appear to be nowhere near the end of their rebuild, and with the Devils looking to make a Stanley Cup run in the next few years, it made plenty of sense to accept the trade this time for Jake Allen.
