In recent days Jeremy Swayman decided not to file for salary arbitration with the Boston Bruins. This was strange as the two sides had gone to arbitration last season and were expected to go down the path once again. Today the Boston Bruins also decided they did not want to go to arbitration with Jeremy Swayman.
In most cases, both sides will file for arbitration and allow for time to negotiate while the team keeps the exclusive rights of the player. In this scenario that will not happen and it opens up the Boston Bruins to potentially lose Jeremy Swayman.
With both sides declining salary arbitration the range of outcomes for Jeremy Swayman both staying and leaving Boston grows immensely.
First up is of course an extension. With salary arbitration, Jeremy Swayman would've been signed to a one-year contract at the price point the arbiter awarded. Now the two sides can focus on hammering out a long-term extension instead.
The second outcome is an offer sheet from another team. Up until this point due to the looming arbitration, other teams could not offer sheet Jeremy Swayman. With arbitration declined other teams can now decided to offer Jeremy Swayman a contract.
Finally, the third option would involve a trade of Jeremy Swayman's rights to a new team. This would lead to an extension in the new city and allow the Boston Bruins to recoup some assets. In either case, there are reportedly several teams checking in on the status of Jeremy Swayman.
As of now, there are no major reports indicating that things have gone South between Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins. Many expect a long-term deal in the coming days. However, if a deal is not signed look for teams to swoop in trying to make a deal.
