In a tense match of tennis, a result is now under major scrutiny. On a match point play, Jack Draper hit the ball but seemed to double hit the ball which would have resulted in a point for Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, the referee did not correctly see the play and instead awarded the point to Jack Draper.
Immediately after the decision was made Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime disputed the call made by the umpire. After a lengthy discussion, it was revealed that video replay is not a feature at this tournament meaning the play could not be overturned.
During the discussion, Jack Draper from the United Kingdom was willing to give Felix Auger-Aliassime the point and continue playing. The umpire was unwilling to admit he was wrong and stuck to his original call. As a result, Jack Draper won the match and moved on to the next round. Since this incident, fans have been outraged at how things were handled.
The fans also pointed out that while Jack Draper was willing to have the play looked at on replay he never offered to do the play over again.
There is a precedent in the past of players being able to overrule the umpire and call for a play to be replayed. However, it is still not common and not technically in the rules as something that is allowed.
Regardless this play will likely send a shockwave through the tennis world. Hopefully, the impact of this match will lead to a universal review system so that players all can play under fair and competitive conditions.
