The Edmonton Oilers have made their first trade following the Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway offer sheets by acquiring Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks
The Edmonton Oilers were put in quite a tricky situation this week when the St. Louis Blues tendered two offer sheets to players Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. Holloway was given a two-year deal with an annual average value of $2.3M, and Broberg a two-year deal worth $4.58-million.
The team has now acquired young winger Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fourth round pick.
This move suggests that the Edmonton Oilers will be possibly pivoting away from winger Dylan Holloway in lieu of a cheaper option. The third round pick they will receive as compensation is more than the cost it took to acquire Vasily Podkolzin.
Podkolzin, the tenth overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft has not quite made it out of the AHL as a permanent NHLer, but has looked good in play at the second level. Holloway only broke out as an NHLer this past season, so the deal makes a lot of sense as they will be able to surround him with a strong supporting forward group.
More moves may come as the team tries to clear cap space, possibly trading one of two of their expensive veteran defensemen in Cody Ceci or Brett Kulak.
Things are about to heat up in Edmonton as less than 48 hours remain before they must make a decision on the offer sheets.
