During the 4 Nations Face-Off break, Utah Hockey Club GM Bill Armstrong and head coach Andre Tourigny addressed the media amid a disappointing season.
Ahead of the 2024-25 regular season, league analysts were split on the near future of the NHL inaugural Utah Hockey Club.
Being met with new excitement and some strong pieces, some expected the team to clinch a playoff spot while others saw them just missing out.
With only 26 games left in the season, Utah is fourth in the Western Conference Wild Card race, standing six points behind and .064 percent below the Vancouver Canucks, holding their Stanley Cup chances at next to none.
Now with the NHL fanbase following along with the 4 Nations Face-Off, team General Manager Bill Armstrong and head coach Andre Tourigny took the break to address the media about how this lackluster season has unfolded.
Armstrong and Tourigny had expressed hopefulness in the team's ability to skate into the playoffs during the preseason, yet even with all odds pointing against them, they both still expressed their belief it could still happen.
When asked if these prior beliefs met with expectations, GM Armstrong stated that a lot of what has turned their game upside-down comes down to injured players and back-up goaltenders: all of which will be remedied in the coming weeks.
"I saw a couple things online the other day where people were comparing us to last year. The big difference is that we're banged up this year. I think that's an important point to remember for us is we kind of overcame it, we kept in the fight despite all our injuries, and now we're finally getting our team back and we have a chance to go battle with everybody playing. Any time you have top guys out with injuries, it's a battle, but I love what our team did. They didn't roll over. They continued to fight, they found ways to hang in there, and we're right in the race. I like where we're at. If you come watch us play, and if you look at our analytics, you can see it starting to come. When you're playing games in the rebuild and you're not close to coming out of it, you're beating teams because you play back-up goaltenders, and you steal games once in a while when nobody's looking. Everybody sees us coming now but we're still in games. That's a good sign."
Utah head coach Andre Tourigny expressed a similar sentient, arguing that the team is exactly where it wants to be with a far less demanding schedule for the remainder of the regular season.
"We're in the fight and that's where we wanted to be. If you would have told me that this is where we would stand at this point with the injuries we have had, I would have taken that any day and now we're getting healthy. The first portion of the schedule was demanding for us so we're going into the second half with a lot of hope. We just beat the best team in the east on a back-to-back where they were sitting home waiting for us. I'm really happy about the way the boys fought in that last week before the break to get us some big points."
Though both Armstrong and Tourigny are correct in their belief that there are enough games left to make a playoffs appearance, it relies on some heavy-hitting teams to make a sudden fall from grace.
Hopefully, regardless of this season's outcomes, both can learn how to improve Utah's chance at a Stanley Cup in their future.
