The New York Rangers have recalled goaltender Dylan Garand to the team as they return to practice and on-ice activity.
It is well-timed since some of their top players remain away attending international obligations, including Team USA who will be taking on Canada in the Four Nations Final tomorrow night. Starting goalie Igor Shesterkin is still recovering from an upper-body ailment.
While he should return in time for the team's pivotal back-to-back set against Pittsburgh and Buffalo this weekend, Garand's status is insurance in case Shesterkin's return will take a bit longer than anticipated, and they need to ensure they remain competitive as they push for a playoff spot.
If Shesterkin misses more than this weekend and the Rangers fail to win both of these next games, their playoff hopes are at risk. That sounds extremely negative, but given the situation the team is in, it's a legitimate concern.
Jonathan Quick has been incredible in a backup capacity, but the starter role is Shesterkin's capacity. The Rangers need him back on top as soon as possible.
As for Garand, he still hasn't appeared in an NHL game this season, so no starts, saves, shutouts, or wins on his ledger yet. But in a sense, this recall does provide him with a valuable opportunity to get some playing time with the team.
As big games approach, having another goaltender available ready to go could prove to be a difference-maker, especially if Shesterkin is out longer than expected.
