Linus Ullmark shared a moment this week that had nothing to do with save percentages. The Ottawa goaltender talked about a fan holding a sign in the stands.

The sign read: "the only noise that matters is the cheers from the fans." The 32-year-old paused on it. You could hear it land.

Ullmark posted a .890 save percentage with three shutouts across 49 games for Ottawa this season. The numbers tell part of the story.

The other part doesn't show up in a stat sheet. The Swedish netminder had highs and lows away from the rink that travelled with him into every start.

That's why the sign mattered. A small gesture from someone in the stands cut through everything else for a minute.

Watch the clip. Ullmark slows down mid-sentence, takes a moment, and lets the words sit before he keeps going.

Ottawa's season ends but Linus Ullmark gets the human moment that lasts

The Senators bowed out of the first round to Carolina in four straight games. The series ended at home on April 25 with a 2-4 loss. The summer starts now in the nation's capital.

That's the backdrop for the moment. A goalie processing a year that didn't end the way anyone wanted, talking about something that has nothing to do with hockey.

Ottawa finished 44-27-11 for 99 points and ninth overall in the league under Travis Green. That earned a playoff spot. It didn't earn a series win.

The goaltending will be a piece of the off-season conversation. So will the depth. So will the offence. None of that is going to feature this clip.

The clip is the human one. The exhausted one. The kind of moment that doesn't make highlight reels but might be the most honest thing said by an Ottawa player all spring.

If you've ever watched someone you care about get pulled in ten directions at once, you know exactly what that face on camera was doing.

Holding it together while quietly noticing somebody noticed.

Hockey forgets that part of itself sometimes. The fan with the sign didn't.

Whatever Ullmark walks into next season, that quote is going to follow him. So is the reminder that what fans bring into a building doesn't always stay there.
