The mic died on the anthem singer at KeyBank Center tonight, and the Buffalo crowd did the only thing a real hockey building knows how to do.

They sang O Canada themselves. Out loud. Together. An American crowd carrying a Canadian anthem because the speakers cut and the singer was left silent.

The clip is already moving across hockey social. You can see fans in red, white and blue jerseys leaning in, picking up the lyrics, holding the room together while the production crew scrambled.

This is Game 5 between Buffalo and Boston. Lindy Ruff's group leads the series 3-1 and can close it out at home tonight. The anthem moment isn't going to make the highlight reel for the result. It might make the better one.

Buffalo finished 50-23-9 with 109 points and the top spot in their division.

They've waited a long time for an elimination night in front of their own crowd. The energy in that building was already at a different level.

Then the equipment betrayed everyone. A Canadian classical singer with no audio. A few seconds of silence. And then a sea of voices stepping in.

You don't script that. You don't fake that.

The hockey context behind a moment that's going viral

Tage Thompson has 4 points and a +5 in the series. The 28-year-old American center has been the matchup nightmare Boston hasn't solved. His line has owned 5-on-5 for three games.

Alex Tuch leads Buffalo with 6 points across 4 games. Both his goals from Game 4 were game-winners. The 29-year-old American winger picked the right week to play the best hockey of his career.

Game 4 was a 6-1 thumping in Boston on Sunday. Lindy Ruff's group hung six on Jeremy Swayman in the road building Marco Sturm needed most. Tonight is the closeout chance.

Rasmus Dahlin has 1 point and a +1 in the series. The Swedish captain has been quieter than usual offensively, but the back end has held up against Pastrnak's line all round.

Why does an anthem moment matter on a night like this? Because hockey crowds in this part of the world have been reading headlines about borders for two years. A KeyBank Center singing O Canada on its own is a quiet rebuttal.

The Bruins canceled their morning skate before this game. Marco Sturm hid his lineup.

Whatever he sends out tonight has to push back against a building that just sang a foreign anthem out of muscle memory.

Buffalo can win its first playoff series in 14 years tonight. The pre-game already wrote a chapter nobody planned for.
