Lightning star out tonight as Jon Cooper signals crucial series turning point
Jon Cooper confirmed Friday morning that Victor Hedman will not play tonight for the Tampa Bay Lightning, with no firm timeline for his return.
The head coach told reporters Hedman is going to be an option "really soon," but stopped short of guaranteeing he plays again in this series.
That's a heavy line from a coach who usually plays things closer to the vest. "Really soon" is hockey shorthand for stay tuned.
He says he does not know if he will play in this series but he can confirm he is not playing tonight."

For a Lightning team that finished the regular season 50-26-6 with 106 points, losing their franchise defenseman at this stage is the kind of hit no opponent has to plan around twice.
Tampa Bay closed the regular schedule second in the Atlantic, with a plus-59 goal differential built largely on a back end Hedman has anchored for over a decade.
Their last regular-season game was a 2-4 loss versus the New York Rangers. Not the send-off they wanted heading into the spring.

Without their top-pair left-shot defender, Cooper has to reshuffle minutes in a series where every shift gets dissected. The penalty kill takes the biggest blow.
Hedman eats power-play time on the back end too, so the second unit either gets simplified or someone steps into a role they haven't held all year.
Cooper didn't name a replacement publicly. He rarely does before puck drop. But the lineup will speak for itself when the gates open.
The Gabby Shirley dispatch had Cooper acknowledging he doesn't even know if Hedman returns this series, which is the part that should sting Lightning fans most.
Tampa's home record sat at 26-14-1 during the regular season. They'll need every bit of that home-ice edge with their best defenseman watching from the press box.
