NHL delivers controversial playoff suspension after unsettling hit in game 5 by Golden Knights' Brayden McNabb
Brayden McNabb just put John Tortorella in a bind after Vegas lost a key blue-line piece to a 1-game suspension.
The league came down on McNabb after his interference penalty on Anaheim center Ryan Poehling in Game 5, and the timing could not be worse for Vegas.
This was not a routine playoff collision.
Poehling looked badly shaken, struggled to stay upright, and then went back down to the ice in one of the ugliest scenes of the round.
That image is what sticks.
Poehling was not reacting like a player trying to sell a call. He looked disoriented, and the entire building felt the mood change right away.
McNabb was tossed at 9:29 of the first period with a 5-minute major and a game misconduct, and Vegas still rolled to a 6-2 win.
Now the bigger story moves to Game 6.
Vegas has to replace a veteran defender who logged 19:31 in Game 5 and plays heavy minutes in hard matchups.
For Tortorella, this is where the bench gets tested. He can talk about discipline all he wants, but the Knights now have a self-inflicted hole on the blue line.

McNabb is not just another body in the lineup.
He is part of the pairings that take the hard starts, defend the crease, and handle the chaos that shows up late in playoff games.
That matters even more against an Anaheim team that finished 43-33-6 and has already shown it can drag a series into uncomfortable hockey.
Poehling scored an overtime winner against Edmonton on April 26.
Vegas finished the regular season at 39-26-17, so this group has lived on structure more than pure margin for error.
Losing McNabb chips away at that identity.
It also puts a spotlight back on composure.

In the playoffs, one reckless decision can wipe out a good night, and that is exactly what happened here despite the Game 5 result.
Anaheim will push this angle hard going into the next puck drop.
The Ducks do not need speeches when the video already tells the story.
Vegas won the game. McNabb may still have handed Anaheim the opening it needed to swing the series back the other way.
