Martin St-Louis is set to coach Game 1 after Kent Hughes cleared up his absence from Canadiens practice in Carolina.

The Montreal Canadiens got the answer everyone wanted on Monday, and it came straight from general manager Kent Hughes before the Eastern Conference Final opened.

After a full morning of speculation, Hughes stepped in during his press conference and shut down the biggest concern around Martin St-Louis.

"General manager Kent Hughes says Martin St-Louis will join the team in Raleigh tonight and that everything is fine.

His absence today has nothing to do with the family situation St-Louis experienced in 2024 when his son was in the hospital."

That was the key detail. It had nothing to do with the personal situation that surrounded St-Louis and his family in 2024, and it was not described as anything serious.

For Canadiens fans, that changed the tone of the day in a hurry.

What started with concern quickly turned into relief once Hughes made the situation plain.

Kent Hughes ends the worry around Canadiens coach

The Canadiens GM did not leave much room for doubt.

He made it clear that Martin St-Louis is expected to be behind the bench tonight.

"Nothing serious: Martin St-Louis should be back with the Canadiens tonight."

That line said everything fans needed to hear ahead of the opener against the Hurricanes.

At this stage of the season, any uncertainty around the head coach draws immediate attention.

It also matters because the Canadiens are heading into one of their biggest games in years.

A trip to the Eastern Conference Final brings pressure, noise, and nonstop reaction around every development.

This time, the organization answered fast and directly.

Hughes gave a reassuring update, and that is exactly what the market had been waiting for since the morning skate.

The bigger takeaway is simple.

This is nowhere near the kind of worrying situation people feared when St-Louis was unexpectedly absent earlier in the day.

Now the focus shifts back where the Canadiens want it: Game 1, the Hurricanes, and a full bench led by Martin St-Louis.
