Offseason surgery takes a turn for the worst for Maple Leafs forward Max Domi

Max Domi is suddenly facing a long summer after the Maple Leafs announced he will be out indefinitely.

The news landed Monday and changed the tone around Toronto's offseason in a hurry. This wasn't framed as routine recovery or a short delay.

According to the team, Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season.

The problem now is what came next.

The Leafs said complications developed after the procedure, and that's why Domi is now listed as «out indefinitely.» That wording says plenty on its own.

Toronto didn't reveal the nature of the surgery. It also didn't explain the complications, which leaves a lot of room for concern this far ahead of camp.

That's what makes this update hit harder. The regular season is still months away, yet the club already had to acknowledge that Domi's timeline is no longer clear.

The second part of the statement matters just as much. Domi will keep working with the club's medical staff and be «re-evaluated at the start of training camp.»

That means there's no firm return window right now. For a player expected to be part of the forward mix again, that uncertainty matters.

Domi played 80 games last season and finished with 12 goals and 24 assists. He also posted a -29 rating, numbers that already reflected a rough year.

Now there's a new layer to that season. If he was dealing with a physical issue the whole way through, some of those struggles look very different.

It also raises a bigger question for Toronto heading into camp. Can the Leafs count on Domi to be ready for puck drop, or do they need to prepare for a longer absence?

For now, all they have is a medical update with no clean timeline attached to it.

And for Domi, that turns one offseason procedure into one of the first real pressure points of Toronto's summer.
