New surgery details emerge after worrying Max Domi news
The Toronto Maple Leafs got a layered medical update this morning, and the news on Max Domi was not the kind fans were hoping to hear.
A report from First Up surfaced Tuesday morning, citing that Domi is doing okay but won't be back in a Leafs uniform anytime soon.
The same report softened the tone slightly on Auston Matthews. Some of the uncertainty around the captain's situation has been dialled back a notch.
Two updates. Two very different temperatures.
Domi's 80-game sample this season was already a problem. The 31-year-old finished with 12 goals, 24 assists, and a -29 rating skating in a middle-six role.
His late-season form was uglier. Domi managed just 3 points across his final 10 games and went minus-8 over that same stretch.
Auston Matthews picture clears as Leafs face uneasy summer
Matthews, meanwhile, played only 60 games at $13.25 million against the cap. The captain put up 27 goals and 53 points, with a -4 rating that doesn't tell the whole story.
His last 10 games showed a player chipping in offense, 1 goal and 6 points, even as the team lost games at an alarming rate.
Toronto closed the year on a seven-game skid. The Leafs went 2-7-1 in their last 10 and finished 28th in the overall standings at 32-36-14.
That's the backdrop here. Any update on the franchise's $13.25 million centre carries weight, and any update softer than the worst-case scenario qualifies as relief.
The Domi piece stings more because of fit and money. He's signed at $3.75 million, and the Leafs need every dollar working harder next year.
The bigger question Toronto can't dodge is what the roster around Matthews looks like in October. The captain may have fewer asterisks beside his name now, but the supporting cast keeps shrinking.
If the timeline on Domi stretches, the Leafs front office will be shopping for forwards in a market that doesn't favour them. And nobody around the Atlantic Division is sitting still.
