The Colorado Avalanche put out a tribute to Lemieux that every hockey fan should see.
Not because it was flashy.
Because it felt real.
The organization posted a full in-memory feature for the 1996 Stanley Cup champion, and the heart of it was Joe Sakic's statement.
That is what made it hit.
Sakic called Lemieux a terrific hockey player, a fierce competitor, and a champion in every way. He also called him a loyal friend, someone teammates could always count on, and a wonderful family man.
That is the line that stays with you.
Because when a franchise icon like Sakic speaks that way, it tells you Lemieux's impact went far beyond old highlights and playoff numbers.
Sakic did not give some cold team-issued message.
He talked about Claude Lemieux like a brother from a championship room, the kind of teammate who would do anything for the guys beside him.
And then he brought it back to family.
He said there was nothing Lemieux enjoyed more than spending time with his grandchildren. That part changed the tone of the whole tribute and made it feel even heavier.
The Avalanche also sent love and prayers to Deborah and the Lemieux family, then closed with the kind of sentence that says everything in a moment like this.
Gone but never forgotten.
Rest in peace my friend.
That is why the post connected so strongly.
It did not read like a formality.
It read like grief.
And for Avalanche fans, that matters because Claude Lemieux is not just another former player in team history. He is stitched into one of the biggest chapters the franchise ever lived.
He was part of the 1996 Cup team.
He was built for playoff hockey.
He was one of those guys you hated against you and loved on your side.
Colorado understood that in this tribute.
The organization could have posted a photo and a short line and moved on. Instead, it gave Lemieux something that felt worthy of the place he holds in Avalanche history.
That is why people should see it.
Not only Avalanche fans.
Not only Canadiens fans.
Anybody who loves hockey.
Because sometimes a team tribute feels bigger than social media.
This was one of those times.
