The Athletic insider confirmed Tuesday that the Montreal Canadiens never had a deal in place for Vincent Trocheck. Nothing in that file got particularly close.
But the bigger detail came in the next breath. Habs management has stated interest in good, competitive, intense centers at different points. Engels doesn't think that interest has waned.
Translation: the deal you heard about isn't real. The broader hunt absolutely is.
Trocheck is the 32-year-old Rangers center. He posted 53 points across 67 games on a $5.625 million cap hit. His minus-16 rating tells you the season around him in New York was rough.
The fit on paper made sense for Montreal. A veteran middle-six pivot. Faceoff strength. Two-way responsibility. Exactly the profile Habs fans have been begging for behind Nick Suzuki for years.
GM Kent Hughes has been clear about the gap. Suzuki is a legitimate 1C. The 2C question has been unresolved for multiple seasons.
Pierre McGuire pushed publicly this week for the Habs to target Robert Thomas of St. Louis. Different name. Same problem being solved.
Engels' wording is the part that matters. Good. Competitive. Intense. Center. Those four words define the entire shopping list. The names will change. The profile won't.
Trocheck was reportedly never on the table seriously. That doesn't mean other Rangers don't get explored. New York finished 29th overall at 34-39-9 with 77 points. Chris Drury's roster is going to be a buyer's market this summer.
The injury list from the Habs' Eastern Conference Final run only reinforces the depth need. Suzuki was reportedly carrying a torn thigh. Slafkovsky had multiple issues. Dobson and Hutson too.
Honestly, Engels is doing what good insiders do. Killing a false rumor while telling you where the real action sits. The Habs are shopping. The phone is open. The asking prices are getting weighed.

Free agency opens July 1. The 2026 NHL Draft lands June 26. Hughes has weeks, not months, to make his next move. The center upgrade is the priority either way.
Trocheck isn't coming. Someone else might. Montreal fans should keep their notifications on.
