John Carlson just got pulled into John Chayka's biggest Toronto summer swing, and this one feels a lot more serious than random UFA chatter.
The report says the Maple Leafs are trying to acquire Carlson's rights before he hits the market. If that is true, Toronto is not waiting around to see what July 1 looks like.
That matters because rights talks usually mean one thing. A team wants to get in early, talk money early, and find out if the fit is real before the line gets longer.
Carlson is the kind of name worth that effort. He is 36, shoots right, and still brings top-pair experience that very few free agents can match. Reports around his market have pegged the next deal around 2 years at roughly $9 million to $10 million AAV, with an East return in play.
The Leafs also are not operating from a place of patience anymore. Toronto went 32-36-14, fired Craig Berube on May 13, and Chayka said Tuesday the coaching search is in its final phase and should be decided in the next several days.

Carlson still has game, too. He finished 2025-26 with 14 goals and 60 points in 71 regular-season games between Washington and Anaheim, then added 6 assists in 12 playoff games for the Ducks.

The risk is obvious. Carlson is not 29, and a 2-year commitment near $10 million per season is a serious bet on a player heading deeper into his 30s.
