Sergei Bobrovsky and Paul Maurice are staring at a contract fight that could hit Florida at the worst time.
That is the story now. Not Bobrovsky's past. Not his playoff résumé. His price.
According to Nick Kypreos, Bobrovsky's ask is as high as 42 million over 6 or 7 years. That is a massive number for any goalie this close to free agency.
It gets even heavier once you look at the age curve. Bobrovsky turns 38 in September, so a deal at that term would carry deep into his 40s.
That is where the Panthers have to make a hard call. They know what Bobrovsky means to their room, their crease, and their Cup window. They also know goalies do not get easier to project at that age.
This is not a case of Florida paying for hope alone. Bobrovsky has 2 Vezina Trophies and 2 Stanley Cup rings with the Panthers, which is why his side can push for premium money.

The pressure comes from the timing. Free agency is only days away, and once a goalie with Bobrovsky's résumé reaches the market, the conversation changes fast.
There is risk on both sides. Bobrovsky is coming off what was described as a down regular season in 2025-26, and that gives Florida a real reason to hesitate on a long commitment.
But the Panthers also know this free-agent class is not loaded. If Bobrovsky gets out there, he would become one of the biggest names available at the position right away.
That puts Bill Zito in a tight spot. He can either pay for the security of keeping a proven starter in the crease, or he can refuse the term and risk opening a hole on a contender.
And this is where the contract ask gets uncomfortable. A 42 million deal over 7 years would run until Bobrovsky is 44, which is the kind of finish that can jam a cap sheet if the drop comes fast.
Florida may still decide the gamble is worth it. Teams with a real chance to win do not love creating goalie drama in the middle of a live window.
Still, this no longer looks like a routine extension chat. Sergei Bobrovsky is asking for a major commitment, and the Panthers have to decide whether loyalty to a star can outweigh the risk tied to age, term, and what comes next.
