The NHL has changed course for 2027, moving its trade deadline away from the Friday slot that drew complaints across the league.
Michael Russo of The Athletic reported the decision Friday, giving front offices an important date more than seven months before the season begins.
“2027 NHL trade deadline has been set for March 1,” Russo wrote.
March 1, 2027, falls on a Monday. That ends a run of four straight Friday deadlines dating back to the 2022-23 season.
Friday deadlines created problems because teams were often scheduled to play only hours after the final trade call. Players could be moved while preparing for puck drop or waiting inside the locker room.
Agents and league insiders had questioned that setup for years. A Monday deadline gives teams the weekend to evaluate their position before making their final calls.

The league still has seven games scheduled for March 1, so the calendar won't be completely clear when trading closes.
But moving the deadline to Monday gives general managers a full weekend of results before deciding whether to buy, sell or hold their roster together.
That timing could matter in tight playoff races. One rough back-to-back or one strong weekend could change how a team approaches the phones Monday morning.

Contenders will use the deadline as their last major chance to strengthen the top six, blue line or crease before the playoff push.
Teams outside the race will have an opportunity to move pending free agents and add draft picks or prospects before losing those players for nothing.
The early announcement also gives players and agents more clarity when discussing no-trade clauses, movement protection and possible destinations during contract talks.
The NHL hasn't eliminated every scheduling concern, but returning deadline day to Monday removes one of the loudest complaints attached to recent years.
