Arber Xhekaj remains unsigned, but Martin St-Louis could still have the rugged defenseman in his Canadiens lineup next season.
The restricted free agent's contract talks have stretched deep into the summer, creating an opening for rival teams to test Montreal's willingness to move him.
Xhekaj brings a rare physical element from the blue line. That edge has become more valuable as players capable of protecting teammates and handling regular NHL minutes grow harder to find.
Insider David Pagnotta confirmed that Montreal isn't alone in recognizing what Xhekaj brings.

Interest doesn't mean Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is actively shopping the defenseman. Montreal still appears determined to keep him unless another club presents an offer that forces a serious discussion.
"The Canadiens have valued him for some time and they haven't pulled the trigger because they haven't found the deal they want [and] they want to keep the player," said Pagnotta.
That stance leaves rival teams chasing a player who isn't officially available. It also gives Montreal leverage while negotiations remain unresolved.
The Philadelphia Flyers have surfaced as a team worth watching. Their interest isn't new, and their pursuit reportedly remains alive.
"Philadelphia has been one, they've had interest in him the last couple of years... still the case now," said Pagnotta.
No move is expected immediately, but the unsigned status keeps pressure on both sides. Every week without a contract gives interested clubs another reason to call.
Montreal values Xhekaj's physical presence, locker-room impact and ability to change the temperature of a game. Trading him would require a return matching qualities that aren't easily replaced.
