Darren Raddysh signed an eight-year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs this month, and something about this fan base finally feels different.
Raddysh posted 70 points last season, 22 goals and 48 assists, with a plus-21 rating that stood out on a roster that leaked goals all year.
He chipped in 10 power play goals and 16 power play assists, real usage on Toronto's man advantage, not just a name on a transaction sheet.
Here's the part that actually plays in the room. Raddysh grew up playing alongside Connor McDavid and Sam Bennett in the Greater Toronto Hockey League before going undrafted.
He built his career from nothing with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. Now he's home, and he signed like he means to stay.
Nick Paul is the other piece of this. He grew up in Mississauga, and by his own account got 600 messages within an hour of the news breaking.
Paul managed 7 goals and 8 assists in 51 games last season. Modest numbers, but that's not really the point of signing him.
Jim Hiller inherits a roster that just lost seven straight
New head coach Jim Hiller was hired on June 17, and he's stepping into a mess on paper. Toronto finished 32-36-14 last season, 78 points, ranked 28th in the league.
The Maple Leafs closed the year on a seven-game losing streak, going 2-7-1 over their final 10 games. That's not a footnote. That's the roster Hiller inherits.
So does bringing home two guys who grew up worshipping the jersey fix a defense that allowed 299 goals? It doesn't, not by itself.
Buying back hometown guys is a bit like repainting a house with a bad foundation. It looks better from the street. Whether it holds through winter is another question entirely.
Gavin McKenna's arrival adds another layer nobody can measure yet. The 18-year-old rookie is expected to anchor the offence the moment he steps on the ice.
Toronto also ran its development camp in July, and Alexander Bilecki, who played for the Mississauga Rebels two years ago, drew real buzz from people in the building.
