Macklin Celebrini gave Mike Sullivan and the Sharks an unexpected boost before the new contract was even signed.
The biggest surprise from Wednesday wasn't only the record-setting extension. It was what Sharks general manager Mike Grier revealed afterward.
Grier said Celebrini had the option to push for the full 20 percent maximum allowed under the NHL's salary cap but chose not to.
Instead, the 20-year-old left money on the table, giving San Jose extra flexibility as the front office continues building around its franchise centerpiece.
“We're very thankful he was willing to give us some flexibility, take a little bit less, and leave some money on the table to help us continue to grow our team,” Grier said.

That statement immediately changed the conversation surrounding the deal. Rather than focusing only on the massive salary, attention shifted to Celebrini's willingness to help the organization stay aggressive in future roster moves.
Grier sends a clear message about the Sharks' future
Celebrini's new contract carries an $18.8 million average annual value over five years, making it the highest AAV in NHL history, even though it fell short of the maximum he was eligible to receive.
For Grier, that difference matters.
Every dollar saved creates more room to add impact players, extend young talent, and strengthen the roster during what the Sharks believe is the beginning of a legitimate playoff window.
It also speaks to the trust between the organization and its young superstar.
Few players entering their prime voluntarily give a team additional cap flexibility, especially after producing one of the league's most dominant seasons.
The extension sends another message around the NHL as well. Celebrini believes the Sharks are building toward something much bigger than individual awards or contract records.
Grier has spent the last year reshaping the roster, and locking up his franchise center was always the top priority. Getting that deal done while preserving additional spending room may prove just as important as the contract itself.
