Alex Ovechkin and head coach Alexei Zhamnov just saw Russia's international hockey door slammed shut for another season.
The IIHF announced Thursday that Russia won't participate in four major championships during the 2026-27 international calendar.
The decision covers the 2027 Men's World Championship, World Junior Championship, U18 Men's World Championship and U18 Women's World Championship.
That removes Russia from every top-level men's and junior tournament on the list, extending an absence that has reshaped international hockey's competitive balance.
The IIHF pointed to ongoing safety, security and sporting integrity concerns after reviewing Russia's requested entry into each event separately.
This wasn't simply an automatic extension of the previous ruling. Russia's federation had appealed the January decision, and the IIHF Disciplinary Board annulled it on May 25 before sending the matter back for another review.
Russia's women still have one opening
One door remains slightly open. Russia's eligibility for the 2027 Women's World Championship will receive a separate IIHF Council review in November 2026.
That distinction makes the ruling even more striking. The IIHF didn't issue one blanket answer across every tournament. It assessed each championship and still denied Russia entry into four of them.
For the World Juniors, the consequence is immediate. Another wave of Russian prospects will lose the chance to test themselves against Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland and Czechia on the sport's biggest junior stage.
The senior decision also removes a traditional medal contender from the 2027 World Championship before roster construction and tournament preparation begin.
Russia remains third in the IIHF men's world ranking, yet its national team is still unable to compete for points, medals or international positioning.
Zhamnov now faces another season without a true World Championship bench, while Russian stars playing across the NHL and KHL remain spectators when the puck drops.
The IIHF has left itself another review point for the women's tournament, but the main message landed hard Thursday: Russia's full return to international hockey isn't close.
