Rickard Rakell could give Mike Sullivan the top-six winger the New York Rangers still need before training camp.
A proposed deal sends Rakell to New York for Carey Terrance, a 2027 second-round pick and another second-round selection in 2028.
This is an editorial trade pitch, not a reported negotiation. But it connects 2 teams moving in different directions after another busy offseason.
The Rangers want more firepower up front. Rakell would give them an established scorer who can play beside skilled centers and contribute on the power play.
Pittsburgh would receive future assets and a young forward in Terrance, giving Kyle Dubas more pieces for the Penguins' roster transition.
Rakell scored 24 goals and 48 points in 60 games last season. One year earlier, he set career highs with 35 goals and 70 points.

The cleanest fit may be beside J.T. Miller and Alexis Lafreniere on New York's second line. Rakell could finish chances without needing to control every possession.

He could also move alongside Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Dorofeyev. That flexibility would let Sullivan adjust his top six without weakening the power play.
Rakell's contract adds value because he is signed through 2027-28. New York would be acquiring more than a short rental for a playoff push.

But the proposed price is significant. Two second-round picks and Terrance would remove 3 useful assets from a Rangers organization still balancing immediate pressure with future planning.
Pittsburgh also has little reason to move Rakell cheaply. His recent scoring, term and ability to play with top talent should create interest from several clubs.
For Dubas, the decision comes down to timing. Keeping Rakell supports the current lineup, while trading him would accelerate the Penguins' effort to add younger pieces.
The Rangers need another proven winger, and Rakell fits the role. But Chris Drury should only pay this package if Sullivan sees him as a clear top-six fixture rather than an expensive depth addition.
