Brady Tkachuk's trade request blindsided former head coach Travis Green, who didn't hide his frustration after losing Ottawa's captain.
Green finally addressed the split during an appearance on the 100% Hockey podcast, offering his first public reaction since Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers.
The coach learned about the request from general manager Steve Staios roughly 3 to 4 weeks after Ottawa's season ended. The timing and the decision both caught him off guard.
Green called the situation “unfortunate” and admitted he was “a little surprised” when informed that Tkachuk wanted out.
Asked directly whether the news made him mad, Green didn't dance around the question.
“A little bit,” he replied, delivering a brief answer that revealed how deeply the request landed inside the Senators' locker room.
Travis Green felt the loss personally
Tkachuk had been one of the main reasons Green was excited about coaching Ottawa. He viewed the captain as a central piece of the club's direction and expected him to remain part of its push forward.
That made the request more than a simple roster issue. Green had built plans around Tkachuk's physical presence, emotional edge and place within the team's top six.
Green chose not to contact the winger while trade discussions were ongoing. He allowed Tkachuk, his representatives and Staios to handle the business before reaching out.
Once the move was completed, Green said the two had a good conversation. His history with the family also matters, as he played alongside Brady's father, Keith Tkachuk.
The Senators received 3 first-round picks and a second-round selection in the June 21 trade. Ottawa later moved one of those first-rounders to acquire William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks.
Green remains confident in Ottawa's younger core, but his comments show the departure left a mark. Coaches expect roster changes. Losing the captain after believing he was committed carries a different weight.
Tkachuk's exit closed a major chapter for the Senators. Green's blunt response confirmed that the decision wasn't received quietly behind the bench.
