Ville Koivunen just became a major piece of Dan Muse's future after Kyle Dubas handed the winger a stunning eight-year commitment.
The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed the restricted free agent to a $32 million contract carrying a $4 million annual cap hit through 2033-34.
That term immediately raises the pressure. Koivunen has played only 47 NHL games, yet no other Penguins player is currently signed beyond the 2029-30 season.
The 23-year-old produced 2 goals and 5 assists across 39 games last season. He also finished the schedule held scoreless in his final 9 appearances.

Those numbers make Dubas' decision one of the boldest bets of the offseason. Pittsburgh could have used a shorter bridge contract and demanded more NHL evidence first.
Instead, the organization gave Koivunen security usually reserved for an established top-six forward. It's the type of announcement that brings back memories of the old fake “Perguins” social media account.

Koivunen's AHL work explains part of the gamble. He delivered 41 points in 34 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and led the club in assists.
He was also named AHL Player of the Month in February and earned a place on the AHL All-Rookie Team. Career-wise, he has 98 points in 109 AHL games.
The challenge is turning that production into NHL offence. Koivunen has often reached quality areas, but his release has arrived late enough for defenders to close lanes and block attempts.
That timing issue now carries real consequences. Muse must find the deployment, linemates and special-teams minutes needed to uncover the player Dubas believes he signed.
Pittsburgh is also managing the final stages of the Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang era. Koivunen's contract makes him part of whatever comes next.
A $4 million cap hit could age well if he becomes a dependable middle-six winger. But the deal will look heavy quickly if his NHL output stays modest.
Dubas skipped the cautious route and attached maximum term to projection. Koivunen now has the runway, the contract and the expectations to prove that confidence was earned.
