Alex Ovechkin has already decided where his story ends, and it's not in North America.
Speaking at a press conference during the Ovi Cup in Moscow on Saturday, the Washington Capitals captain confirmed he plans to live in Moscow once his NHL career actually wraps up.
"Moscow is my hometown. It's clear that I'll live here. My family, loved ones, and friends are here," Ovechkin told sports.ru's Nikita Nadezhin.
That's not exactly a surprise given his roots. Ovechkin was born and raised in Moscow, where both his parents played professionally for Dynamo Moscow, his mother in basketball and his father in soccer.
Ovechkin's own hockey career started with that same Dynamo organization, spending his first four professional seasons there in what was then called the Russian Super League.
He's stayed connected to the club ever since, currently serving in an advisory role and even returning to play for Dynamo during the 2012-13 NHL lockout.
He's also been consistent about how he wants his playing career to actually end, saying multiple times he intends to play his final game with Dynamo before officially retiring.
Ovechkin still hasn't set a final NHL retirement date
This confirmation comes just over a month after Ovechkin signed a one year extension to stay with Washington, keeping his NHL career alive for at least one more season.
He still hasn't committed to whether 2026-27 will actually be his final year in North America, leaving real uncertainty around exactly when this Dynamo farewell game happens.
Ovechkin and his son Sergei also took part in the Ovi Cup's all-star gala match over the weekend, with Sergei reportedly scoring a hat trick in that exhibition.
None of this changes anything about this coming season. Ovechkin is still expected to suit up for Washington, still chasing whatever records remain within reach.
But for a player who's spent over two decades building a life in North America, this is about as clear a signal as it gets that his roots in Moscow were never really in question.
Whether that final Dynamo farewell comes after this season or a couple years down the road, Ovechkin has made one thing clear. Wherever his NHL career eventually ends, home was always going to be Moscow.
