Patrick O'Sullivan is moving up in Toronto, with Jim Hiller's Maple Leafs giving the former Edmonton Oiler a much larger development role.
Toronto announced Sunday that O'Sullivan has been promoted to director of NHL development after spending the previous three seasons as a development coach with the organization.
The club made the move official with a short announcement: “Patrick O'Sullivan has been named Director of NHL Development.” For O'Sullivan, it represents another major step since moving from playing into development work.
There's also an Edmonton connection that makes the move stand out. O'Sullivan once wore an Oilers sweater during his NHL career before eventually retiring and beginning the next chapter of his hockey life.
Now, instead of Edmonton finding a place for one of its former players, the Maple Leafs have turned O'Sullivan into a growing piece of their own hockey operation.
He already knows Toronto's NHL roster well. During his three seasons as a development coach, O'Sullivan worked directly with Maple Leafs players through skill sessions rather than operating strictly with prospects.
Toronto keeps adding former NHL experience
That familiarity gives the promotion more weight. Toronto isn't bringing in an outsider to learn the organization from scratch. The Maple Leafs are handing more responsibility to someone who has already spent years around their players and development staff.
O'Sullivan also brings 334 games of NHL experience to the position. He finished his playing career with 58 goals and 161 points while appearing for Los Angeles, Edmonton, Carolina, Minnesota and Arizona.
His Edmonton stint makes this another case of a former Oiler landing meaningful responsibility elsewhere in the league. Toronto has now positioned him to have a direct hand in the development of its NHL roster.
The timing matters because the Maple Leafs are reshaping their hockey operation after a difficult season. Toronto finished 32-36-14 and missed the playoffs, creating pressure for changes beyond the roster itself.
The organization has already made major changes around its leadership group, and O'Sullivan's promotion continues that internal restructuring. Rather than replacing him, Toronto decided his work over the last three seasons deserved an expanded mandate.
For the Oilers, O'Sullivan is part of their past. For the Maple Leafs, the former Edmonton forward has become part of what they're building next.
