Patrik Laine joining Matvei Michkov could take Philadelphia's offense to another level, and the Flyers are reportedly in the mix to make it happen.
Per Herb Zurkowsky, Philadelphia is one of several teams connected to the still-unsigned winger since free agency opened July 1st.
"Since free agency began on July 1, Laine has been linked to the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs and, more recently, the Philadelphia Flyers," Zurkowsky reported.
That's a long list of suitors for a player still sitting unsigned in August, and it says plenty about both his talent and the real risk still attached to signing him.

Laine is a seven-time 20 goal scorer with 224 goals and 422 points across 537 career games, exactly the kind of shooting pedigree that doesn't often show up on the open market this late in the summer.
Why the fit with Michkov makes real sense
The appeal for Philadelphia is straightforward. GM Danny Briere has already made real moves toward pushing this roster up a level, and Laine represents a low-cost, high-upside swing that fits right into that pattern.
Pairing Laine's shot with a pure playmaker like Michkov could be genuinely dangerous.
Laine doesn't need to carry the puck through the neutral zone himself, he just needs a passer feeding him in his spot, and Michkov's vision is exactly that kind of trigger.
His last real healthy sample came with Montreal in 2024-25, scoring 20 goals and 33 points in just 52 games, with 15 of those goals coming on the power play alone.
That's the specific role Philadelphia should want him in, a pure power play weapon parked in his off-side circle, forcing penalty kills to respect his one-timer immediately.
The risk here is real though. Laine's 2025-26 season basically didn't happen, limited to 5 games and a single assist before a core muscle injury required surgery.
He hasn't topped 60 games in any of his last five seasons, which explains exactly why a player with this much talent is still unsigned this deep into August.
For Philadelphia, that risk is manageable given the Flyers' available cap space. A modest, incentive-heavy deal costs almost nothing if the injuries continue, and pays off enormously if Laine stays on the ice.
If Laine delivers even a fraction of his peak scoring next to Michkov, this becomes one of the best value additions of the offseason. If not, Philadelphia hasn't sacrificed any real assets to find out.
