Noah Philp has stepped away from hockey at 27, ending a pro career that included NHL stops with Edmonton and Carolina.
The undrafted forward announced his retirement before playing a game for HV71 in Sweden, despite recently signing with the club for a fresh start overseas.
Philp explained that his motivation for hockey was no longer fully there and that he didn't want to continue unless he could be completely invested.
That made the timing especially surprising. He had already committed to a new team and a new league, yet decided honesty was more important than forcing another season.
Philp apologized to HV71 and everyone involved, making it clear he understood the inconvenience created by walking away so close to the start of the season.
His NHL résumé was brief but real. Philp appeared in 32 games between the Oilers and Hurricanes and scored 2 goals at the highest level.
