Brad Marchand underwent offseason surgery on a lingering lower-body issue, and his return for the Florida Panthers' season opener is no longer a given.
The update surfaced Saturday morning, right as training camp chatter starts building in South Florida.
Marchand had the procedure over the summer, according to Gino Hard, citing George Richards' reporting on the situation.
No firm recovery date has been attached to it. Florida hasn't said when camp testing or contact drills might start for him.
He still put up 54 points last season, 27 goals and 27 assists across 52 games, numbers that make him one of Florida's steadiest scoring threats.
Marchand carries a cap hit of 5,250,000 dollars, a real commitment for a team that leaned on him in every situation.
He chipped in 6 power play goals and 14 power play assists a year ago. That's production the Panthers can't just shrug off if he opens the year on the shelf.

Paul Maurice built last season's attack around Marchand slotting into a scoring role most nights, and Florida still finished with a -25 goal differential.
The Panthers closed at 40-38-4 for 84 points, ranking 25th overall, but they ended the year on a three-game winning streak.
Losing Marchand for any stretch of camp is a rough break for a roster that already bled goals at a stubborn rate all season.
So does Maurice hold a spot for him and hope the timeline is short, or does someone else grab that opportunity in exhibition games?
There's no word yet on whether Marchand skates before puck drop or eases in once the regular season is already rolling.
