Brad Marchand has given Paul Maurice and the Florida Panthers an unexpected health concern with training camp drawing closer.
Marchand revealed that he underwent offseason surgery after injuries he had been dealing with failed to heal without a procedure. He did not disclose the exact nature of the injuries.
The timing immediately raises questions. Marchand said the surgery came together late, leaving him facing a recovery and rehabilitation period with the new season approaching.
That recovery has already forced him to pull out of Zee's Final Shift, the farewell event being held in Slovakia for longtime Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.
Marchand and Chara shared a long history in Boston, making his absence from the event notable. Marchand made clear that his rehab has to take priority so he can return to the ice.
The bigger concern for Florida now is whether that return happens before training camp, during camp, or after the regular season has already started.
