Dylan Larkin is expected back in Detroit, giving head coach Todd McLellan a major storyline before training camp even opens.
The Red Wings reportedly expect their captain to report to camp and play for Detroit this season despite the trade tension surrounding him.
That changes the immediate picture. Instead of preparing for life without Larkin, Detroit can enter camp expecting its top center to remain part of McLellan's lineup.
Nothing about the situation guarantees the noise disappears. Larkin's future has been one of Detroit's biggest offseason questions, and reporting for camp won't automatically erase that uncertainty.
But having him in the locker room gives McLellan something concrete to work with. He can build his top six knowing the captain is expected to be available.
For Detroit, that's far cleaner than opening camp with a major hole down the middle and another roster move still hanging over the organization.

That makes training camp more than a normal tune-up. It becomes the first real test of whether Detroit and Larkin can move forward together after an offseason filled with uncertainty.
The Red Wings also have little incentive to let the situation become a daily distraction. Their captain returning should stabilize the lineup, not dominate every conversation around it.
Larkin remains one of Detroit's most recognizable players and a central piece of its forward group. Losing him would force the Red Wings to replace far more than a single roster spot.
For now, Detroit appears prepared to keep moving with him. That doesn't end the speculation, but it gives McLellan a much clearer starting point entering camp.
And once the puck drops, Larkin's performance and usage could quickly determine whether the trade talk fades or becomes even louder.
