Sutter Muzzatti is headed to Detroit, giving Todd McLellan another big forward to evaluate before the Red Wings finalize their depth chart.
Fans have finally got a trade, their first to witness without Steve Yzerman as general manager.
Detroit acquired Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators for future considerations, adding another young piece without giving up an immediate roster asset. He is quite literally 'huge, standing at 6-foot-8 and 226lbs.
The 23-year-old center brings obvious size. Muzzatti is listed at 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, giving Detroit a different profile among its developing forwards.
Nashville selected him in the 5th round of the 2023 NHL Draft at 143rd overall, but his path will now continue inside the Red Wings organization.
Muzzatti has yet to appear in an NHL game, which makes this move much more about development than an immediate answer for Detroit's top six.
For Steve Yzerman, the attraction is straightforward. Detroit gets another young forward into the system at a minimal acquisition cost and can see how his game handles the jump to pro hockey.
Sutter Muzzatti gets a fresh opportunity in Detroit
The real battle starts once camp opens. Muzzatti isn't walking into a guaranteed NHL job, especially with McLellan needing players who can handle pace, details and responsibility away from the puck.
His size should give him an opportunity to stand out around the crease, along the boards and in puck battles, areas where bigger forwards can force coaches to take notice quickly.
Detroit can also afford to be patient. Muzzatti has no NHL experience on his résumé, so development time outside the Red Wings lineup would hardly be surprising.
That puts the focus on whether he can turn his frame into reliable professional production rather than simply being another big body in the organization.
For Muzzatti, the trade creates a clean opening. Instead of remaining tied to the organization that drafted him, he now gets a new coaching staff and a different development path.
There is also little downside for Detroit. Future considerations leave the Red Wings with room to evaluate Muzzatti without creating pressure for an immediate return.
If he earns his way up the depth chart, Detroit gains a 23-year-old forward with size and untapped NHL opportunity. If not, the organization still added another camp option at a low acquisition cost.
Will Sutter Muzzatti eventually earn an NHL role with Detroit?
