Connor McDavid is asking for something most superstars never admit they need, and he said it straight to Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on 32 Thoughts.

"I want to be coached. I do," McDavid said. "There's areas of the game that I need some help with, and I need to be coached."

That's the Oilers captain, fresh off a 138-point season, pointing at his own game and asking for structure from new head coach Mike Babcock.

McDavid posted 48 goals and 90 assists in 82 games this season, adding 41 power play assists for an Edmonton team that finished 41-30-11.

Pressed on where exactly he needs to improve, McDavid didn't dodge it.

"Defensively, and things like that," McDavid said. "Offensively too, when it dries up, especially when it matters most, you need to have a system to fall back on."

That's a pointed admission. McDavid can get impatient away from the puck, leaving his lane to chase the puck carrier instead of holding his ground.

Why Babcock's system could unleash more than just McDavid

If Babcock moves Edmonton away from a zone defense, that shift could actually suit McDavid's aggressive instincts rather than fight them.

Matthew Savoie and Vasily Podkolzin both play with that same aggressive streak, and a system built around it could unlock more from all three.

Podkolzin posted 19 goals and 37 points this season with a plus-16 rating, numbers that suggest he's ready for a bigger role under a new structure.

Savoie is currently day-to-day and expected out until at least October 20, which complicates how quickly Babcock can install his system with a full lineup.

McDavid also touched on why he still wants to finish his career in Edmonton.

"I'm extremely grateful for how my life is," McDavid said, describing a level of contentment that suggests he isn't chasing an exit if the winning stays consistent here.

Babcock hasn't coached an NHL game yet in Edmonton, and the early read on his system will say a lot about whether this version of the Oilers finally gets over the top.
