Nolan Foote is among the latest Flyers cuts as head coach Rick Tocchet gets a much tighter group to evaluate before opening night.
Philadelphia placed Foote, Zach Aston-Reese, Carl Grundstrom, Danila Klimovich, Jack Studnicka and Cam Dineen on waivers Wednesday.
That group immediately puts the focus on the battle for depth jobs. These aren't early-camp names disappearing quietly from an oversized roster. Several entered camp fighting for a legitimate NHL look.
The Flyers also assigned Noah Powell, Riley Thompson, Spencer Gill, Hunter McDonald, Ty Murchison and Carson Bjarnason to Lehigh Valley's training camp.
Matthew Gard took a different route, with Philadelphia returning the forward to the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. That completed a major round of decisions across multiple levels of the organization.
In total, the Flyers removed 7 players directly from their NHL camp group while another 6 went onto waivers. That's the type of cut that changes the competition almost overnight.
For Tocchet, the benefit is obvious: fewer bodies, more meaningful reps and a clearer look at the players still pushing for spots.
Flyers roster battle gets much tighter
Foote's placement on waivers stands out because it puts his immediate roster status in clear terms. Philadelphia is moving deeper into camp without guaranteeing him a place in its NHL group.
The same applies to Aston-Reese, Grundstrom, Klimovich, Studnicka and Dineen. All 6 now sit in a different part of the roster process as management sorts through its remaining options.
General manager Daniel Briere is the executive overseeing the cuts, and this round creates a cleaner path toward the final roster decisions still ahead.
There's also a development angle in Lehigh Valley. Powell, Thompson, Gill, McDonald, Murchison and Bjarnason can now shift their attention toward earning roles with the Phantoms instead of surviving another NHL camp cut.
The pressure now moves to the players who stayed. Every remaining practice rep, preseason shift and special-teams look carries more weight with fewer competitors in the room.
Philadelphia hasn't reached its final roster yet. But the middle of camp is over, and Tocchet's choices are becoming much more revealing.
