Alex DeBrincat answers heated scrum with overtime winner for Detroit

Alex DeBrincat got tangled up with Buffalo 54 seconds into the third period, then won the game for the Red Wings in overtime.

Ansar Khan had it from the building. Tempers flared with DeBrincat and Moritz Seider right in the middle of it.

Buffalo led 2-1 at the time, with 19:06 left and a delayed penalty sitting on the board.

Detroit got it to overtime and he ended it. The game winner goes beside his name.

He put 8 shots on goal and collected 5 penalty minutes across 18:37 of ice time.

Detroit managed 26 shots in total. He had eight of them by himself.

Seider logged 24:21, added an assist and took 4 penalty minutes of his own.

Sheldon Dries scored. He was one of six Detroit players placed on waivers Tuesday.

Jacob Bryson picked up an assist in the same game. His name was on that list too.

Axel Sandin Pellikka got the other Detroit goal across 20:33 on the back end.

Daniil Tarasov stopped 17 of the 19 he faced and took the decision.

Jiri Kulich and Trevor Kuntar scored for Buffalo. Kuntar also walked out with 5 penalty minutes.

Colten Ellis faced 18 shots and Alex Lyon handled 8. Neither goaltender got a decision.

Both teams finished with exactly 17 penalty minutes. Gavin McCarthy led Buffalo with 6.

Dylan Larkin skated in battle drills on Wednesday, his first practice of the entire camp.

Detroit sits 2-0-1 through the exhibition schedule and hosts Columbus on Saturday.

Buffalo drops to 1-1-1 and welcomes Pittsburgh the same afternoon.

Nobody in Detroit has a settled lineup yet, and the captain's future still isn't resolved.

Thursday didn't answer any of that. It did give the room something to feel good about.

So what does a September overtime winner buy? Answering a scrum with the goal that ends it works like losing an argument at dinner and then picking up the bill.

DeBrincat made himself the loudest player on that ice twice in one period. Todd McLellan has four days left to decide who else does that.
