Nylander returns to the city where he was born as the Flames make a surprising move

Alex Nylander is finally coming home. The Calgary Flames signed the Calgary-born winger to a one-year, two-way contract on Friday.

The deal carries an $850,000 AAV. Cheap, flexible, and exactly the kind of depth move Craig Conroy can walk away from without anyone noticing.

But nobody should mistake this for charity. The left winger just put up 53 points in 65 games with the Toronto Marlies in 2025-26, his highest AHL total on record.

Then came the spring. Nylander dressed for 24 playoff games with the Marlies and chipped in six goals.

The NHL résumé is thinner. He's got 49 points in 126 games career-wise, spread across stops in Buffalo, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Toronto.

His best look came with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24, when he scored 11 goals in 23 games.

Since then? Five NHL games with the Maple Leafs, no points, and the rest of his time spent with the Marlies.

Former eighth overall pick gets another shot in his hometown

Buffalo took Nylander eighth overall in 2016. A decade later, that draft slot still follows him around like a price tag nobody wants to pay.

A two-way deal is basically a job offer with a probation clause stapled to it. The talent gets you in the door, and the rest is on you.

This is a smart bet by Calgary, full stop. A right-shot winger with real finishing touch costs next to nothing, and the downside is a trip to the minors.

Put it next to Jonathan Huberdeau's $10,500,000 cap hit. Nylander's entire deal wouldn't cover even 10 percent of that number.

The timing matters too. The Flames sit 1-1-1 through three exhibition games after Thursday night's 4-3 shootout loss in Seattle.

Aydar Suniev scored on the power play in that one, and Brennan Othmann picked up two assists. That's the forward group Nylander walks into.

Ryan Huska now has one more body to sort through before the lineup gets set. The Flames visit Edmonton on Saturday night.

Then it's Seattle at home on Oct. 1, the first regular-season puck drop of the Dome's farewell season.
