Pastrnak recently followed Marchenko on Instagram, a small move that suddenly carries more weight because Boston has already been connected to the Columbus Blue Jackets winger.
Elliotte Friedman reported that the Bruins made an offer for Marchenko at one point. Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Seattle and the New York Islanders were also among the teams he linked to the winger.
That makes Pastrnak's timing interesting. An Instagram follow doesn't confirm a trade or even serious negotiations, but fans quickly connected it to Boston's reported pursuit.
Marchenko would address an obvious need for the Bruins. He's a 6-foot-3 winger capable of playing in the top six and has cleared 20 goals in each of his first 4 NHL seasons.
His biggest offensive season came in 2024-25, when Marchenko recorded 74 points. That production explains why Columbus can demand a meaningful return instead of settling for a package built around distant assets.
Boston faces a steep price for Marchenko
The Blue Jackets' position could make negotiations difficult. Friedman indicated Columbus isn't especially interested in futures, meaning an offer loaded with draft picks alone might not move the conversation far enough.
Boston does have pieces to work with. The Bruins own their first-round selections in 2027 and 2028, along with Toronto's potentially unprotected 2028 first-rounder.
Young players and prospects could also become part of the discussion. Will Zellers and Cooper Simpson represent developing assets, while Mason Lohrei, Matt Poitras and Pavel Zacha are established names who could draw attention in a larger package.
The bigger question is whether Boston is prepared to subtract from its current roster to add another high-end winger beside Pastrnak.
Marchenko's contract situation adds pressure on Columbus. He's scheduled to become a restricted free agent next summer, leaving the Blue Jackets with a decision if there's doubt about his long-term future with the club.
For the Bruins, adding Marchenko would give Sturm another dangerous scoring option and potentially change the makeup of Boston's top six immediately.
Pastrnak's social-media move proves nothing by itself. But with Boston already identified as a team that has made an offer, it has given an already active trade story another jolt.
