NHL preseason's biggest scrum erupts during heated Sharks-Golden Knights clash

Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks pulled away from the Golden Knights last night after a third-period scrum that had the Vegas crowd fuming.

It boiled over with the game tied 2-2 in the third, bodies piled up in a heap and the Sharks headed to the power play.

One fan summed up the building in three words: "whole house mad."

The Sharks went on to win 4-2. Mason Marchment scored the winner and added an assist.

Celebrini had a goal and an assist in 19:03, and he took a minor along the way.

Dmitry Orlov scored on the power play, and Michael Misa added a goal in just 9:42 of ice time.

So how do you make a road crowd that angry in the preseason?

You win the goaltending matchup, for starters. Askarov stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced and played all 60 minutes.

Carter Hart made 12 saves on 16 shots at the other end.

The Golden Knights outshot the Sharks 29-16 and still lost.

Brett Howden took four penalty minutes for Vegas, while Mitch Marner and Braeden Bowman each took a minor.

The Sharks had six different players sit for minors, including Celebrini, Marchment and Orlov.

Darnell Nurse logged 20:47 on the San Jose blue line and chipped in an assist.

That's the kind of finish Ryan Warsofsky should love. A group that doesn't back down in a hostile building is worth more than a tidy box score.

It's like crashing a house party and leaving with the last slice of pizza. Nobody inside is happy about it, and that's the point.

Tomas Hertl scored on the power play for Vegas, and Nic Dowd had the other goal. Shea Theodore went minus-3.

The Sharks finished the preseason at 2-1-1 and open October 1 at home against Florida.

Ryan Craig's Golden Knights open Tuesday at home against Chicago.

These two meet for real on November 27 in San Jose. Nobody in that Vegas building is going to forget this one by then.
