Nikita Kucherov has told the Lightning he won't re-sign and wants to be traded, and Elliotte Friedman says he knows why.
According to Friedman on Sportsnet's Saturday Headlines, the lack of pace Kucherov felt in the contract negotiations is a major reason he told his teammates and the organization he wouldn't re-sign.
That detail matters. It frames this as a negotiation that stalled, not a player who simply woke up wanting out.
The timing is awkward for Tampa Bay. The Lightning lost 5-4 in a shootout at Nashville tonight, and Kucherov played in it, a night after the story had already been moving for hours.
Kucherov is signed through 2026-27, with UFA status waiting at expiry and no extension signed. Walking into a season like that without a new deal is exactly where a slow negotiation turns into a trade request.
The production hasn't been the problem. He has 18 points in 13 games, with 4 goals and 14 assists, and sits at +5.
| GP | G | A | PTS | +/- | |
| 2026-27 | 13 | 4 | 14 | 18 | +5 |
| Career | 892 | 404 | 737 | 1141 | +205 |
The team around him is doing fine too. Tampa Bay is 8-3-2, with a perfect 6-0-0 mark at home and a 6-2-2 record over the last 10.
That makes this a tricky call for Julien Brisebois. A contender with its best player asking out doesn't get to rebuild quietly or wait for the noise to fade.
Why a slow contract process can cost the Lightning a franchise winger
Over his NHL career, Kucherov has 1141 points in 892 regular-season games. He added 177 points in 159 playoff games, so any team that lands him is getting a proven postseason scorer, not just a regular-season one.
Our earlier look at Nikita Kucherov's $20M contract ask already pointed to money as a possible sticking point. Friedman's reporting puts the focus on pace, which is a different complaint, and one the Lightning may have been able to fix.
Sportsnet's account of Friedman's report is what pushed this to the front of Saturday's headlines.
Friedman reported that the lack of pace in the talks is a major reason Kucherov told the club he wouldn't re-sign.

For other teams, this is where interest gets serious. We already laid out Kucherov's possible landing spots with Canadiens and Oilers, and a stalled negotiation tells those clubs the player's mind is made up.
The Lightning host Detroit on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the questions will be waiting for Kucherov and Jon Cooper's group at the rink.
Should the Lightning trade Nikita Kucherov now rather than risk losing him for nothing?
