Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic is pointing to the Vegas Golden Knights as a team to watch in the Nikita Kucherov sweepstakes.

The Kucherov chatter has been loud all Monday, with Toronto at the center of most of it. Now a second, very different suitor has surfaced, and it comes from one of the most connected reporters in the business.

LeBrun wrote that Vegas is the team to keep an eye on, and that it would be just the kind of big swing GM Kelly McCrimmon has been so successful at pulling off.

Nothing is confirmed, and the Lightning haven't said a word about moving their winger. But it does change the shape of the conversation.

Earlier today, a report suggested Kucherov could land with the Maple Leafs this summer, and Kucherov's reported Maple Leafs destination had already become the loudest rumor of the day. LeBrun's note pulls the other way.

Kucherov isn't coming off a down year, either. He has 18 points in 13 games this season, including 4 goals, and Tampa Bay sits 8-3-2.

That matters, because a team playing this well isn't an obvious seller. Jon Cooper's group is fourth in the Atlantic Division and takes on Detroit on Tuesday.

Why Vegas would make sense for Kucherov

The Golden Knights are 9-5-1 and second in the Pacific Division, but they lost their last game 2-5 to New Jersey. They're playing in Boston tonight as this story circulates, and Ryan Craig's team heads to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Goals haven't been the problem, with 53 scored. A forward of Kucherov's caliber would raise the ceiling of a contender that already has a +9 goal differential.

The timing has a contract angle too. Kucherov's deal carries a $9,500,000 cap hit and expires after this season, he has no extension, and he'd be a UFA at expiry. Any team that wants him has to think about the next contract as much as the trade.

He has also reportedly named the players Nikita Kucherov wants to play alongside, and Vegas wasn't tied to any of that. If he has real say in where he ends up, a rental pitch from McCrimmon gets complicated fast.

Vegas is the better hockey fit than most fans will admit. The question is whether Tampa Bay moves him at all, and whether he even wants to go.

Both teams are back on the ice Tuesday, and the questions will follow them.
