Elliotte Friedman just shared the impression around Nikita Kucherov in his 32 Thoughts column: the Lightning star won't sign anywhere until July 1st.

That lands in the middle of a week full of Kucherov noise. Tampa Bay has been telling other teams it won't move him, and the Lightning star is a pending UFA at the end of this season, so every team watching has questions about what comes next.

Friedman's line was short and left little room for guessing.

Read it plainly. Whatever happens before the deadline, nobody should expect Kucherov to commit to a new address ahead of free agency opening. Friedman framed it as an impression, not a confirmed fact, and that distinction matters.

Tampa Bay isn't acting like a team looking to sell. Frank Seravalli reported that the Lightning are telling teams Kucherov isn't available at the deadline, and Chris Johnston added that he won't leave the way Dylan Larkin or Connor Hellebuyck did.

What a July 1 wait means for the Lightning

The Lightning are 10-3-2 and sit 3rd in the Atlantic Division, so there's no pressure to rush anything. They beat Chicago 4-1 on Thursday night at home, where they're a perfect 8-0-0.

Kucherov didn't hit the scoresheet in that one, though he fired three shots in 20:26 of ice time. He still has 20 points in 15 games this season, including 16 assists.

The cap hit and the contract situation make this a bigger story than one player. He's 33, he's carrying a $9,500,000 cap hit through 2026-27 with no extension signed, and a possible walk in July is a real franchise question for Jon Cooper and Julien Brisebois.

My view: Tampa Bay is right to hold him, and it's the only sensible play for a team in the top seven of the league. Selling a point-per-game winger while the Lightning are winning at this rate would be a mistake. The risk is losing him for nothing in July, and nobody has an answer to that yet.

There's also the Andrei Vasilevskiy angle. His agent Dan Milstein spoke about the goalie's future this week, so the Lightning have two huge decisions hanging over the same core.

For now, the next test is Saturday, when Tampa Bay visits Minnesota. The Kucherov questions will follow the team there, and they won't go away until July 1st.
