Michael Russo just flagged a Quinn Hughes milestone that puts the Wild defenseman in Bobby Orr territory.

It landed tonight while Minnesota plays San Jose, and it comes with a big question attached. Hughes is on an expiring deal, and the Bill Guerin doubts about re-signing Quinn Hughes have hung over this team for more than a week.

Russo noted that Hughes, in his 525th game, became the fourth-fastest defenseman in NHL history to record 100 multi-assist games, behind Orr, Paul Coffey and Denis Potvin.

Orr got there in 437 games. Coffey needed 459 and Potvin 511, so Hughes sits right behind that group.

Hughes is the only active player on that list, and the company is absurd. Orr piled up 645 assists in 657 games, Coffey finished with 1,135 and Potvin with 742.

Hughes had 436 assists through his first 524 games, so this isn't a hot week. He has been setting people up for years, first in Vancouver and now in Minnesota.

This season the pace hasn't dropped. He has 22 points in 17 games, 17 of them assists, and a +9 rating that backs up how much the Wild lean on him.

Why the Wild can't treat Hughes as a rental

Minnesota is 11-3-3 and first in the Central Division, so the timing matters. Contenders don't casually let a defenseman with this résumé reach free agency.

Guerin has been blunt about it. He said he won't beg Quinn Hughes to stay, and there have been no extension talks "in a long time."

That stance looks shaky now. Walking away from a player putting his name beside Orr, Coffey and Potvin would be a mistake, and every multi-assist night makes the price of waiting go up.

The Wild host Tampa Bay on Saturday, and the clock on Hughes keeps ticking with the team in first place.

Quick hits

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS: Zachary Werenski scored again, but the Blue Jackets dropped a 5-2 decision in Buffalo tonight. The road game got away from them.

MILESTONE: Leo Carlsson reached 100 NHL assists tonight in Calgary, the Anaheim Ducks' official account confirmed. A nice round number for a young center.

INJURY: The Flames announced that Kevin Bahl is out with a lower body injury and won't play tonight against the Ducks. That's a blow to the blue line.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS: John Tavares faces the Canadiens on Saturday, and tonight he went out of his way to praise Habs legend Carey Price. Rare words from a Leafs captain-type voice in this rivalry.

BOSTON BRUINS: Morgan Geekie scored again last night in Pittsburgh, his third goal in three games, in a 6-2 Bruins win. He keeps finding the net.
