Another woman has joined an NHL team after Jessica Campbell made history
Kim Weiss, former assistant coach of the Maryland Black Bears, just became the latest woman to join the NHL organization after joining the Avalanche's AHL affiliate the Colorado Eagles.
Kim Weiss has had a massive rise up the ranks in her hockey coaching career. Following time on the ice and years coaching youth and girls' hockey, she hit a breakthrough, getting promoted to associate head coach of the Maryland Black Bears in the NAHL.
The following year, she made an appearance in Colorado. She, along with Ohio State women's hockey assistant Kelsey Cline, served as guest coach for the Avalanche. They were scheduled to help at development and training camp, as well as on and off during the 2023-24 season.
Weiss clearly made an impact on the Colorado Avalanche leadership, after they made things official with her earlier this week. After Emily Engel-Natzke and Jessica Campbell, she has become the third woman hired to coach with the organization. Kim Weiss will take on her next role as the video coach for the Colorado Eagles, the Avs' AHL affiliate. Matt Zaba will also be a new addition, taking on the duties of a goaltending coach.
Though it is always difficult trying to be a trailblazer in any major establishment, Kim Weiss has a proven coaching record and will certainly be looking to make good on her name in the AHL. Hopefully, she can perform up to the high standards of the league and perhaps, one day, become the next woman to coach at the NHL level.
