Toronto Maple Leafs linked to 1000-game NHL veteran as season quickly approaches
Today a new piece has linked the Toronto Maple Leafs to free agent forward Blake Wheeler as the NHL season draws near.
Many NHL teams are working to finalize their rosters with the NHL season just a few short weeks away. As a result, teams are scouring the free agent market for any hidden gems. One of those players who will likely be signed is 16-year NHL veteran Blake Wheeler.
A report in recent weeks has connected the longtime veteran and former captain to the Boston Bruins along with former first-round pick Kailer Yamamoto. A potential player tryout contract could be coming to both players.
However, with Blake Wheeler still unsigned speculation has begun that the Toronto Maple Leafs might want to make a push to add another veteran to their forward group.
Maple Leafs could look to add Blake Wheeler to the fold
For much of this NHL offseason Toronto Maple Leafs fans and media were hoping for a major shake-up to the forward group. However, with just a few weeks before training camp, the team has not done much. Their lack of depth along with the looming threat of a Nick Robertson hold out has fans on edge.
If the Toronto Maple Leafs still feel a need to add to their forward group Blake Wheeler could be a fantastic piece. Last season before getting injured Blake Wheeler had 21 points in 54 games. Prior to that season, he has consistently hit the 50-point mark for much of his career.
Despite now being 38 years old by the time the season starts there could still be some juice left in him. If the Toronto Maple Leafs feel they can get a great season out of Blake Wheeler it is a risk they must be willing to take.
