Through five games this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a solid record of 3-2-0, and with their veteran core rolling, there's confidence that this organization may be headed back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2024/25 after a two-year absence. However, there's a major roadblock in their return to success, and that's the goaltending struggles that their star starter has had this season, with Tristan Jarry tallying an .836 save percentage and an even more dreadful 5.47 GAA.
Unsurprisingly, the team may be looking to move on from him, and according to a report from Josh Yohe of The Athletic, they tried just that this past summer, but found absolutely no suitors around the league.
A week into the new season, things are just getting worse, and after Jarry signed a five-year, $5.25M AAV deal back in the summer of 2023, it's getting even harder for the team to trade him. With the emerging Joel Blomqvist and veteran Alex Nedeljkovic also in the goaltending room, the team have the depth and the talent to make a push, but with Jarry's contract weighing them down, it's going to be hard to find success this season.
After Jarry's poor start, Yohe confirmed that the team will still look to find him a new home, and with some teams out there having plenty of cap space, the team may be able to get it done if they give up a draft pick or two in the process. Ultimately, if Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins want to be a genuine threat again, they need to find a way to move on from the 29-year old goaltender.
