The Lightning were in New Jersey on Tuesday night to face the Devils and won the game 8-5 after a great team effort. Regardless of the result, the Lightning announced a big roster move.
The renowned insider Elliotte Friedman shared an official update on the NHL waiver wire on X, Wednesday afternoon.
He revealed that the Tampa Bay Lightning placed Conor Sheary on waivers.
Here's what he posted on X:
Sheary won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. This season, the forward took part in three games with the Lightning and couldn't add his name to the scoresheet.
He's currently playing his second season with the Bolts. Last year, he scored 15 points in 57 games. The last time he played in the AHL was in 2015-16, with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Throughout his career, the 32-year-old forward took part in 591 NHL games with the Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, and Lightning. He tallied 267 points, including 124 goals in that time.
This move could also be strategic, as the Bolts GM Julien BriseBois was spotted at another game, possibly eyeing different trade targets. He could be hoping to see a team claim him to free up cap space.
It's hard to predict if another NHL team will jump on the occasion to claim him. Sheary is currently going through the second year of his three-year contract valued at $2 million average annual value. With many organizations dealing with cap space struggles, his contract could deter a lot of general managers from taking a chance on him, even if many teams could use his help.
