It looks like the injured players in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization are finally ready to get back on the lineup. After months of recovery, the team announced that Jani Hakanpaa and Connor Dewar would join the team last week for the Leafs' two-game roadtrip.
In a new development, we learned that they are set to be sent to the Marlies in the AHL for a LTIR conditioning stint:
Both Dewar and Hakanpaa were on the Long Term Injury Reserve when the season started. Dewar underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason, while Hakanpaa was injured with the Dallas Stars at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Hakanpaa, a defensive defenseman, scored 12 points in 64 games with the Stars last season. He's expected to bring the same skillset to Toronto, set to add a lot of grit and defensive depth to the Leafs' blue line. He signed a one-year, $1.47M contract with the Leafs on July 1st, but because of his injury, nothing was confirmed by the team nor the NHL before the end of the summer, near the start of the training camp.
As for Dewar, he should be added to the lineup somewhere on the bottom six. Last season, the forward tallied 14 points in 57 games with the Minnesota Wild and added five more in 17 games with the Maple Leafs. The Leafs acquired him at the last trade deadline from the Wildin return for Dmitry Ovchinnikov and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick. This summer, he signed a one-year, $1.18M contract in Toronto.
It'll be interesting to see how the two players perform with the Marlies, after months away from the ice.
